Prepare to get wet as you rappel down a series of 4 isolated waterfalls and hike through the clouds in a remote canyon surrounded by a primary rain forest.  Your guides secure you into you safety harness and assist you in your descent through the areas enchanting gorges and lush cloud forest.  Our Canyoneering site is located 30 minuets from Santa Elena at the El Mirador Lodge with amazing views of the Lake Arenal and Arenal Volcano. 1st Waterfall is 20 meters high, the 2nd is 20 meters and the 3rd and 4th are at a height of 15 meters. The " Canyoneering " part that requires the use of a harness takes 1.5 hours. Safe and fun for ages 10 an up.

This reserve, founded in 1972 by George and Harriet Powell, is the better known of the two cloud forest reserves.  In 1975 the initial 328 hectares of the reserve were increased with the addition of the Quaker communities 554 hectare water shed preserve.  The reserve now covers around 10,500 hectares.  Elevation ranges from 600 meters above sea level to 1800 meters on isolated peaks.  This reserve, under the administration of the Tropical Science Center , is known world wide for its biodiversity and is visited each year by many tourists and scientists.   We would strongly recommend that all those who visit Monteverde take a hike at one of the two reserves.  A guide is a plus as you will learn a lot but this is an awesome experience with our with our a naturalist guide.  All the trails are in fair condition and well marked.

These trips offer one-way transportation for people and their luggage. We will either take your luggage by packhorse or by boat as circumstances allow. With advance notice it is also possible for us to make arrangements with car rental agencies for us to chauffer your car around the lake while you ride by horse. We have stables and pasture near the Arenal Lake which allows us to operate this trail and keeps our horses from having to make return trips up or down the Mountain after a tour. Some other organizations that operate solely out of Monteverde or Arenal sometimes require their horses to make a return trip. If you are looking for a little adventure and a chance to get around in Costa Rica without having to take a bus or taxi then this is the way to go! And anyway the horseback ride is about as bumpy as driving on our roads. Below are details on two horseback rides we are offering from Monteverde to Arenal or vice versa. This tour takes in total approximately 5 ½ hours depending on the riders and the hotels where we will be picking up and dropping off.

1 ½ Hours by car from Monteverde to Rio Chiquito
3 ½ Hours by horse from Rio Chiquito towards the volcano
¼ Hour boat ride across the lake
And finally a car ride from the Arenal side of the Lake to your hotel.

Along the Lake Trail there are many tropical birds, views of the volcano and scenic jungle parts. This is a suitable ride for any level of experience.
