This tour is a must for anyone with a serious interest in nature. A premontane moist forest, Carara National Park is “an excellent reserve that has wildlife of both the Guanacaste tropical dry forest and tropical wet forests of southern Pacific Lowlands” (Carrol L. Henderson, Wildlife of Costa Rica). This area sits like an island of forest surrounded by pasture land and coastal development. The park has become the last refuge in the Central Pacific for wildlife, acting like a magnet for local fauna drawn to its undisturbed habitat. With an area of 4700 hectares, it's the last large forested area in the Central Pacific and one of the two remaining areas where the endangered scarlet macaw can still be seen in healthy populations.

Carara is famous for its world class birding, and anyone entering the park is sure to find an abundance of wildlife which includes two species of monkeys (the white face Capuchin and the Howler), sloths, agoutis, raccoons, coatis, and a variety of reptiles. In this important transitional zone, you will see new pioneer forest, secondary forest and a large portion of remaining (old growth) primary forest. Due to its proximity to the Tárcoles river, during its seasonal flooding the park has, within its borders, a fresh water wetland complete with crocodiles, caimans and a plethora of shore birds.
